Due to advances in veterinary
medicine, dogs and cats are living longer than ever. One of those advances is a
trend toward preventative medicine, or keeping pets well, rather than preventing
illness. We are pleased to offer a new program designed to maximize your pets
health and life expectancy.
The "Over Fourty" Wellness
Program consists of a thorough physical examination by Dr. Stone or Dr. Couret.
Laboratory tests on blood and urine will be performed to check the status of
your pet's kidneys, liver, thyroid galnd and blood cell counts. An EKG will be
performed and read by a cardiologist to assess the condition of the heart.
Finally, radiographs (x-rays) will be done to evaluate the chest and abdominal
cavities of your pet.
After all of the test results are
reviewed by a doctor, recommendations will be made based on the outcome of these
tests. Recommendations will be made about diet, nutritional supplements,
excercise requirements, the possible need for medication or even further
testing.
Because the aging process varies by
species, breed and lifestyle, the appropriate age to begin an "Over
Fourty" Wellness Program varies. The following is a guide to define an
"Over Fourty" patient:
Small dogs weighing under 20 pounds:
9-13 years
Medium dogs of 21-50 pounds: 9-11.5 years
Large dogs of 51-90 pounds: 7.5-10.5 years
Giant dogs of more than 90 pounds: 6-9 years
Most breeds of cats: 8-10 years
Please ask our receptionist or one of the doctors for further details about the "Over Fourty" Wellness Program
